Miki P’s Musical Journey
✿✿✿
Born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas, Miki P (aka Mikala Petillo) grew up in a home of music enthusiasts. She naturally gained an ear for melodies & rhythms, singing in church choir early in her life. By age 11 she was quickly learning how to play both guitar and drums, and in 6th grade started accompanying her church choir on acoustic guitar/bongos.

By her sophomore year of high school she was performing music professionally in a teen band called American Slim, playing drums and learning how to sing lead vocals at the same time. Regularly executing 4-hour-shows, Miki was discovering the ropes of being a pro entertainer on weekends throughout her formal education. American Slim released 1 album of original music in 2017 titled “Irreplaceable” with Miki contributing 5 original songs to the record, including the title track, her first true experience stepping into the world of songwriting & publishing. After her H.S. graduation and alongside regularly performing in ‘Slim, by age 19 Miki was teaching music lessons and sharing her knowledge and lived musical experience – at one point mentoring 30 students a week.

An inspired musician, Miki has the capability to not only be able to share her life experiences and lessons learned through her voice & lyrics, but also through every instrument she performs on. Always a student, she is almost entirely self taught on guitar, singing, drum set, piano, bass and ukulele.
A journey a lifetime in the making, Miki P was officially established as a recording and performing solo artist in the Spring of 2018.
She has released 3 EP’s “Swallowtail” (2019), “Don’t lose your Hope” (2021), “Lucky Penny” (2024), 3 full-length albums “Dome of Swallows” (2018), “Right Where We Are” (2020), “The World Still Spins” (2023), a handful of singles produced by herself including “Peter Parker!” (2022), “Your Love” (2022), “moonbow” (2022). Her YouTube channel has 90+ videos, totaling to 51,200 overall views encapsulating her musical journey & highlighting her growth over the years.

Shortly after establishing herself as a solo artist, Miki P began to piece together a band around her sound. Miki P and the Swallowtails was born out of this era, at first only performing Miki’s solo material and meticulously picked covers. Almost 6 years later, The Swallowtails (now a duo lead by Rachel Lovelace and Miki P) is a staple act in the Kansas City music network; having released multiple albums and performing regularly in the Midwest – including some of KC’s biggest gigs like the Boulevardia Music Festival, and opening for Ha Ha Tonka at the recordBar.
The Swallowtails are an independent acoustic band experimenting in the rock/pop genres while performing on what are traditionally folk/classical instruments, creating a unique sound all their own. Featuring Miki P on Guitar/Vocals and Rachel Lovelace on Bassoon/Vocals, the duo’s original music out of Kansas City is migrating throughout the Midwest and beyond.
